The Results of a Proficiency Test Should be Directed to a Positive Manner of Teaching

Do you usually divide your students into groups? How do you usually group your students? Is it based on the result of the tests, the alphabets of their names, or the origins? Most teachers tend to group their students based on the results of a test – a proficiency test. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of The English Language 4th ed. (2002), proficiency is defined as the quality of doing a particular skill. Unfortunately, the result of the test sometimes directs teachers to take a less positive manner of teaching. Rather than pointing out the students’ competencies, teachers tend to label or judge the students based on their own feeling. This label respectively hinders students’ progress, something which should not happen in education. To my surprise, there is also possibility for a test to be biased.
